You’ve likely invested a lot of time into obtaining your driving license in Louisiana. Once you pick up the keys to your own vehicle, you have freedom, it’s an exciting time.

Unfortunately, these dreams can sometimes be shattered by road traffic collisions. More crashes among teenagers in the U.S. happen than in any other age group.

You don’t want to become part of these statistics, so are there any extra steps you can take? Outlined below are some tips on how to stay safe as a young driver in Louisiana.

Resist the urge to show off

You might be the first one in your friend group to pass the test. All of your peers look up to you in awe. Well, this won’t be the case if you have an accident. Driving can be fun but it is also a serious business, and accidents do happen. It will take you some time to build up confidence and a feel for handling motor vehicles, so take your time and try to avoid complacency.

Limit distractions

Distractions are a safety hazard for any driver, especially inexperienced road users. There is never a good time to use your cell phone while driving, and it should be reserved only for a severe emergency. If you’re the only person with a car, your friends are going to want to travel with you regularly too. Make sure you establish some ground rules. Shouting, play fighting, and other types of rowdy behavior are probably best saved until you reach your destination.

As a young driver in Louisiana, you want to try and buck the trend by avoiding a collision. Sadly, no matter how responsible you are, some accidents are simply unavoidable. If you have been injured by another road user, you may be able to obtain compensation for your injuries.
