How dangerous are truck drivers to other road users?

On Behalf of | Jan 20, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

It is natural to feel some level of fear when driving next to large trucks, especially eighteen-wheelers. Even for the most experienced of drivers on the road, it’s understandable to feel intimidated by the sheer power and size of these vehicles. Couple that with the fact that the news seems to be filled with stories of truck drivers causing serious accidents and it’s easy to build up an almost paralyzing fear.

Having said that, are trucks really as dangerous as we think they are?

Large truck crashes present a real problem

Statistics show that, for the state of Louisiana, the number of large trucks being involved in fatal crashes has remained consistent over the last ten years with 98 crashes in 2020. Louisiana also has a number of incredibly busy interstates, such as I-10 and I-20. With the majority of truck crashes either happening in rural areas or on the interstate, this poses a danger for other road users.

It appears, therefore, that the problem truck drivers pose to road users in Louisiana and across the country as a whole is one we should all be aware of when sharing the road with them.

What causes the problems?

There are a number of reasons why large trucks pose a danger to other road users. Their sheer size can make it difficult to shift lanes safely, especially if a car or motorbike is in the truck driver’s blind spot or they’re driving while distracted by something else.

Distracted driving caused by tiredness, using a cell phone, talking to passengers or eating and drinking can all contribute to crashes as it makes the truck driver less aware of their surroundings and may mean they make maneuvers without proper signaling.

If you’ve been injured due to the negligence of a truck driver, the injuries can be devastating. There are compensatory damages available that can help you financially while you recover.
