5 Ways to Participate in Distracted Driving Awareness Month (April)

by | Mar 22, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Every single day, approximately nine traffic fatalities around the United States are the direct result of distracted driving. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that an additional 1,000 people sustain injuries daily in motor vehicle collisions involving inattentive drivers.

Despite the potentially fatal consequences of focusing on anything but the road ahead, distracted driving remains a widespread problem. In an effort to combat its prevalence, the National Safety Council (NSC) observes Distracted Driving Awareness Month every April.

If you sustained injuries in a collision with someone who was texting or eating while behind the wheel, turn to The Downs Law Firm. Our entire team of attorneys and staff is dedicated to providing the legal advice you need, combined with the service and personal attention you deserve. Read on to learn how you can participate in Distracted Driving Awareness Month:

  1. Spread the Word

You can inform people in your community about the dangers of distracted driving by hanging posters in your workplace, school, or church and by posting relevant facts and statistics on your social media profiles. Visit the National Safety Council online for access to all kinds of free resources and infographics.

  1. Attend the NSC’s Webinar

On April 19, the NSC will be hosting a free webinar called “Engaging Ways to Address Distracted Driving at Work.” You can register for it here.

  1. Follow the Trend

To kick off the month and get everyone talking, the NSC will be hosting a social media promotion on April 2. You can sign up to support the cause on the Thunderclap website. Don’t forget to use the hashtag #justdrive in all your posts so it will start trending.

  1. Take the Pledge

You may not have any control over the motorists on the road around you, but by pledging to #justdrive, you will at least be doing your part to reduce distracted driving. After taking the pledge, share it on social media so your friends can take it, too.

  1. Set a Good Example

Unfortunately, none of the above actions will do any good if you do not eliminate distractions when behind the wheel. Commit to being part of the solution instead of contributing to the problem, and make an active effort to avoid distracted driving whenever you hit the road.

If you have children, it is especially important to set a good example. Reminding new motorists of the dangers of distracted driving and encouraging them to practice safe habits from the start may be the most effective way to implement lasting change.

In the meantime, though, inattentive motorists will remain a serious problem around the country. If you were hurt in a wreck with a distracted driver, contact The Downs Law Firm today.
